FreshDirect vs. Food Emporium (delivery)
I must say that I'm pretty happy with FreshDirect (FD). I received my second order from them today (they've always delivered timely), and I ordered a lb. of their French Roast coffee (they will grind to whatever specification you wish - mine is Electric Drip (Basket filter)) for $4.99 - it's really good! Plus, they added a few bonuses - a big chocolate-chip cookie and a couple cans of tuna (hope Jason likes tuna.) Nice touch!
I know that Food Emporium (FE), a chain of larger grocery stores, also provides online shopping & delivery as well, so I was curious as to what their system is all about. If you shop FE online (rather than going in-store, FD has no actual stores) the delivery fee is $8.95 for same day, but only $3.95 for next day delivery. (FD is $4.95 for delivery, earliest is next day morning, but you can order as late as 10:59pm the night before.)
I haven't tried FE online before, and perhaps I will after comparing prices. (FE store prices are not so competitive - generally, FD beats them.) I'm not sure I like the navigation on the FE website, though - it's not as intuitive or user-friendly, I think.
Another great thing about FD (which I'm not sure if FE has) is that it stores all of your previous orders, so if you like certain products you can just recall them (and the quantities) and order them again easily. That way you don't have to navigate through your choices again, esp. if you just order certain basic essential items over and over.
Technology can surely be fabulous. With the help of grocery delivery and our amazing high-tech dishwasher, I'm on the way to being a domestic queen! (Now if only we had a washer/dryer in the apartment... ok, ok, I'm getting greedy.)
